 | About us | | Wellhead Books was started by Stephen Mobsby some 24 years ago in the West of England to sell Embroidery and Textile books to practitioners of the art in Devon & Cornwall. With the growth of Craft Fairs it became the first bookseller to sell Textile, Quilting and Embroidery books at craft fairs.
A few years after the founding we began taking books to local embroidery groups and Spinners and Weavers Associations at their open days or AGMs. With the help and encouragement of these groups we began to carry books on other crafts that interested our existing customers and soon found ourselves carrying an expanded range of craft books including Lace, Dyeing, Felting, Knitting and Sewing.
As the list of Craft Books stocked increased we found ourselves being invited to more and differing events and we started to carry a wide range of Woodworking Books, Jewellery Making, Pottery, Dolls and Dollmaking. In the end we became a fully fledged craft bookseller stocking books from all the crafts we could find.
All the time we tried to anticipate trends and fads in crafts and we have over the years kept up with peoples' interests and demands ending up with some very unusual subjects such as Sundials, Native American Canoes, Pyrography and Paper Airplanes.
We were invited ten years ago to Art in Action and we started stocking Practical Art books for the first time. This proved to be an excellent move as we have a wide range of books on Watercolour Painting, Oils, Acrylics, Pastels, Pencil Drawing and Mixed Media and attend a number of Art Festivals and shows.
With the advent of Digital Photograpy we started selling photography books as many of our customers who wanted to photograph their textile, art or craft work and enhance their images on computers found like us that the booklets that came with the cameras were poor and that straightforward jargon free photography books were needed.
The current growth area for us is in Beading Books; we had little idea twelve years ago when some American Beaders persuaded us to import and distribute their first Bead Books that Beading would be received with such enthusiasm and that Beads and Beadwork would grow at such a rate and lead to added growth in Lampworking, Glassworks and Jewellery and Precious Metal Clay (PMC). We now supply Bead Books to many other shops and museums.
A final addition to business resulting from the bead book boom was the starting of a series of Bead Shows through West of England Events Ltd which is half owned by Wellhead Books.
Wellheadbooks.com is the latest venture for Wellhead Books which is still a family owned and run business. The current venture combines the industry experience and bookselling expertise of the founder, Stephen Mobsby, and the IT and web expertise of Tristan Mobsby (Stephen's son). We hope you like it. This website has been created with you, the customer, in mind. We have tried to make it easy to navigate, informative, honest and straightforward.
